This paper discusses the impact of Australia’s Operation Sovereign Borders - a military-led response to people smuggling - on Australian-Indonesian relations. According to the author, the operation not only highlights cultural differences between Australia and Indonesia but also reflects how Australian security policy works against, rather than with, its surrounding regions. The author argues that the operation will not only harm Australia's relations with Indonesia but also those with the wider international community.
