This commentary discusses the 2013 terrorist attack by Al-Shabaab on the Westgate Mall in Kenya and its implications for the security of shopping centers around the world. The author first describes the developments that led to the attack and then assesses the vulnerabilities of commercial center structures. He concludes that measures introduced to improve the security of malls will increase the cost and inconvenience to the public.
