This paper uses the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) to illustrate how a counterinsurgency campaign can be waged and won. According to the author, the Wars of National Liberation era (1945-1975) came to define modern ‘classical’ insurgency and ‘classical’ counterinsurgency. He concludes that the impact of the Malayan Emergency on contemporary counterinsurgency thought and practice should therefore not be underestimated.
