This commentary discusses the possibility of a stronger strategic partnership between South Korea and Vietnam to deflect China’s growing regional dominance. The author argues that South Korea seeks to establish itself as a recognized middle power and supports a stronger Vietnam as part of a more integrated East Asian community. He describes China's strategy toward ASEAN, Vietnam's relevance in South Korea's China policy and concludes that intensified bilateral relationships will allow the weaker nations to work together in balancing China's hegemonic intentions.
