This commentary focuses on Wirathu's - Buddhist monk and leader of the nationalist 969 movement - role in the Myanmar Muslim-Buddhist conflict that erupted in 2012. The author reviews the sectarian violence and Wirthu's role in inciting it and examines the extent to which Wirathu's role as an effective social influencer is implicitly supported by those in power.
