This article discusses developments in China’s relations with ASEAN member states and the implications this has for the balance of power in Asia. The author discusses China’s diplomatic and strategic interests in building up bilateral ties with individual ASEAN countries alongside multilateral cooperation and concludes by outlining some critical issues for ASEAN and its neutral role within the regional architecture.
