This commentary analyzes conflicts in Southeast Asia and argues that studies of these conflicts downplay the role of religion and highlight socioeconomic, political and nationalist motivations instead. The author explains that religion is the primary impulse behind many of the conflicts in Southeast Asia and concludes that religion should be brought back to the center of conflict analysis.
