This commentary critically examines the July 2013 military coup in Egypt. The author argues that Egypt’s transition from autocracy to democracy has been hampered by the two forces that threatened it from the outset: a military determined to retain its power behind the scenes and a Muslim Brotherhood that sought power despite being ill-prepared for office. According to the author, the ousting of President Mursi will further complicate Egypt’s transition, change the dynamics of Islamist politics and trigger broader repercussions across the Middle East and North Africa.
