This commentary argues that Australia and Indonesia should expand their cooperation in maritime defense. The author describes three interrelated trends in the regional strategic environment that warrant this expansion: 1) the world’s economy is gradually gravitating toward Asia, which gives more strategic weight to the region, 2) the US military rebalance emphasizes Australia’s role as a US ally, and 3) Indonesia's waters could become more saturated with transiting foreign maritime forces.
