This commentary examines the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), and the perceived institutionalization of the relationship between the two countries. The author argues that while the dialogue may seem to focus on each country's own trade and security issues, it also helps shape a more altruistic global order and increases international cooperation. He also says that, as the two countries have different expectations of one another, sustained engagement is perhaps the best way for them to navigate the difficulties in their relationship.
