This brief discusses the US-Japan alliance and the Joint Statement the two released on October 3rd 2013 following their Security Consultative Committee meeting. The author states that the statement was important as it reaffirmed the role of the US-Japan alliance and paved the way for greater US-Japan defense cooperation in emerging areas of national security. However, he also says that the two still face the most difficult challenge, the implementation of what they have agreed upon in the Joint Statement.
