This commentary discusses the US reaction to the ousting of Egypt’s President Morsi in July 2013. The author argues that the event has made it difficult for the US to strike a balance between spreading democratic ideals and protecting US national interests. He concludes that in order to maintain this tightrope act, the US will have to draw a clear distinction between legitimate and democratic expression of dissent and terrorism, if it wishes to avoid being an impediment to political change.
