This report examines 1) why Indonesia wants to modernize its defense forces, 2) the complications surrounding the attempt, 3) the strategic implications the reforms might have on Australia, and 4) what Canberra might do to support Jakarta's efforts. Having said all this, the report concludes that the Indonesian military has a long way to go before it fulfills its modernization ambitions.
