This commentary describes the humanitarian response to the devastation caused by typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The authors assess the capacity of local and national officials to provide immediate humanitarian assistance and identify priorities that need to be addressed. They conclude by discussing the international response to the catastrophe.
