This brief looks at how the EU can better assess the fundamental rights, democracy and rule of law commitments of its member states. The authors argue that a strong political impetus is needed at Union level in order to set up a new supervisory 'Copenhagen Mechanism' that would effectively and periodically evaluate member states’ compliance on these matters.
