This brief discusses Pakistan's political development and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's initiatives to put the country's powerful military under the full control of civilian authority. The author argues that Pakistan – with its reasonably well-developed political parties that now compete in regularly scheduled elections, a Constitution that an autonomous judiciary is able to protect, and a military that appears to have accepted civilian control – may offer a model other large Muslim states could emulate.
