This brief examines India’s increased focus on its disputed border region with China - Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland - and the impact of President Mukherjee's visit to the region on the country's diplomatic relations with China. The author argues that the development of infrastructure and business in the region is an integral part of India’s attempts to forge closer ties with Southeast Asia. He highlights China's mild response compared to previous reactions and points out that in its policy toward the Northeast, New Delhi needs to pay attention to local concerns.
