This note charts al Qaeda's evolution over a period of time, specifically, al Qaeda 1.0 (1988 – 2001), al Qaeda 2.0 (2002 – 2011) and al Qaeda 3.0 (2011 – present). It also provides some thoughts on the future threat of the organization to the US.
