This brief examines the motivations behind China’s setting up of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands. The author believes that the move is part of a bid by the Chinese leadership to consolidate power domestically as well as a display of increased assertiveness towards claiming the disputed islands.
