This paper analyzes the results of four Indian state elections which were announced on December 8 2013. It argues that the real story of these elections was the performance of the new Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). It also explains that the results emphasize demographic and social changes that are affecting India more rapidly and profoundly than at any time since independence in 1947. The results also foretell very deep problems for the Congress Party, which leads India’s coalition government and which must go to the polls before May 2014.
