This paper examines piracy in Somalia and offers a Somali perspective on the challenges it poses to the country. In particular, the author examines the political and social context of piracy in Somalia in order to understand why it has flourished in the country; investigates the piracy's core characteristics to identify its internal stakeholders; and proposes a reformulation of the existing counter-piracy approach so as to enable Somali people themselves to be at the forefront of tackling and eradicating piracy.
