This paper talks about the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the political party that leads the ruling BN coalition in Malaysia, and its December 2013 general assembly. The authors argue that the assembly demonstrates that UMNO has decided to reaffirm its nationalist roots, which has led to its partners to put pressure on the party and possibly negatively affected its image among the young. They also discuss the future of UMNO and say it does not depend on how the party deals with the opposition alliance, but how well it can institute internal reform and prepare centrist younger leaders for leadership.
