This commentary analyzes China’s unilateral declaration of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) over the East China Sea and the response from ASEAN countries to this move. According to the author, the muted reaction from the ASEAN countries could be interpreted as a sign of acquiescence which may embolden China even more. He concludes that if ASEAN proves unable to act collectively, there is nothing the organization can do to prevent China from dominating the airspace over the South China Sea and beyond.
