In the wake of Beijing's decision to deploy a frigate in support of multinational efforts to dismantle and dispose of Syria's chemical weapons, this commentary discusses the strategic reasoning behind China's increased engagement in multilateral security operations. The author argues that China is steadily expanding its naval engagements in order to enhance its global influence. This, in turn, will help to mitigate negative perceptions of the People's Liberation Army-Navy's (PLAN) modernization efforts.
