This paper argues that, from a personal point of view, students in Europe are actually making rational decisions when they opt not to take courses in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, if all benefits and costs are factored into the equation. In light of this, the authors argue that European public policy needs to provide incentives to induce students to enter into these fields.
