This brief presents the survey results on employment and unemployment in India for the years 2009-10. The results show a significant deceleration in employment growth, a decline in employment in the rural areas, as well as a decline in employment levels for those aged 15-24. The author outlines the possible reasons for these results and draws some conclusions relevant for Indian social development and change.
