This brief discusses the driving factors and implications of Pakistan’s growing nuclear capabilities. The author says that despite previous policy on nuclear weapons, Pakistan could now be increasing its levels of such weapons at a faster pace than any other country in the world. Furthermore, due to the factors driving its weapon-building program, Pakistan is likely to continue to increase its nuclear stockpile. He goes on to argue that this rapid expansion will probably negatively affect stability in South Asia and beyond and Pakistan should therefore cut back its nuclear build-up.
