This brief looks at the obstacles to the growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, where calls for reforms to enhance business and investment conditions were raised in the course of the Arab spring. It also provides policy recommendations for policy makers in the region to help overcome the obstacles to MSME growth, including the suggestion that the each country should develop a national strategy specifically focused on MSMEs.
