This article examines the principal policy issues surrounding Australia’s future submarine force. The author starts the piece by describing Australia's strategic outlook and its implications for the country’s future force structure. He then goes on to argue that submarines are Australia’s most important strategic asset and that the country should focus on having conventional submarines, with at least six to nine providing the best option for the country’s security.
