This article examines the changing role of China in the international system and the challenge it poses for foreign policy makers, particularly in the US and Australia. He highlights the point that China's concern with Taiwan is decreasing, but that its regional assertiveness and economic slowdown are factors that the US and others should observe closely. He goes on to argue that Australia and the USA should focus on a blended policy of cooperation with China, along with an insistence on international norms, and maintenance of alliance and military strength.
