This paper examines the implications of US defense budget constraints for the country's rebalance toward Asia, its alliance relationships, and for the alliance partners themselves. To do this, it first examines global defense spending trends as well as the security environment and how they are affecting US security strategies. Following this, the author examines US expectations for its alliances, including that with Australia, before providing policy recommendations for Canberra.
