This commentary argues that understanding the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa requires an acknowledgment that the region’s states are multi-ethnic, multi- religious and multi-tribal entities. The author believes that this shift in mindset is required to overcome the deep rooted fears over threats to identity which are then exploited by elites to cause conflict in the region.
