This report analyzes how US defense spending cuts impact military capabilities that are relevant to the US-Japan alliance and argues that both countries would benefit from collaboration to strengthen the alliance. To make this argument, the authors examine the status of the US-Japan alliance, the US budget debate, and Japan's reaction to the potential impact of US defense cuts. They then look at ways that both countries can leverage the ongoing debate on defense strategy and spending to deepen their alliance.
