This commentary talks about Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's call in early 2014 for countries to stand up to an increasingly assertive China. The author argues that few countries are likely to take up the offer, and that rather than standing up to China, policymakers, in ASEAN and elsewhere, should look for other ways to work with the country.
