This commentary discusses various aspects of the Geneva II talks between the Syrian regime and the opposition, which started on January 22 2014. In particular, it looks at regional and international involvement in the process; the participants and what their interests are; and the challenges to the implementation of any agreements made at the talks. The author also talks about potential objectives for the talks and gives some policy recommendations for the European nations involved.
