This commentary discusses the implications of the Russia's military reforms, launched in 2008. The authors believe that, although the reforms will not fundamentally change the balance of power with the United States, increased military activity with relation to Europe must be expected. They also say that the reforms will expand Moscow’s ability to project power in post-Soviet regions and to reinforce President Putin’s efforts to increase ties between Russia and the countries of these regions.
