This paper provides an overview of developments and trends in Chinese trade politics and policy since the 1980s. It outlines China's multilateral, bilateral and unilateral trade policy, the institutions and actors involved in Chinese trade politics, as well as the decision-making mechanisms relating to trade policy at the institutional level. Finally, the author discusses the link between Chinese trade policy and its foreign policy objectives, and outlines three scenarios for Sino-European trade cooperation.
