This commentary talks about the relations between Malaysia's ruling United Malays National Organisation party and the opposition, Parti Islam SeMalaysia. The author says that both parties are entering a new phase of looking for common ground over Islamic issues, but that they also remain competitors for the support of the majority Malay and Muslim community in the country. He also says that Shariah, or Islamic law, is emerging as a new issue in the country, partly due to Brunei’s adoption of hudud, the Islamic penal code.
