This commentary discusses the planned replacement of the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Futenma, agreed by the governments of Japan and the United States in 1996. The authors examine the relevance of the replacement for the US-Japanese alliance and the broader measures which the Japanese government will need to take in order to reorganize its defense forces.
