This commentary discusses the symbolic significance of the Yasukuni Shrine for Japan and the background to protests by China and Korea following Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s visit there in 2013. The author also looks at how it came to be that convicted Japanese war criminals were enshrined in Yasakuni and how this relates to Japan's historical discourse regarding the country's actions in WWII.
