In the aftermath of the recent visit of Japan’s Prime Minister to India, this brief reviews the strategic implications of enhanced defense-security relations between the two nations. More specifically, the author discusses three common areas of concern/interest as expressed in the final joint statement issued by both Prime Ministers: a shared anxiety regarding China’s behavior; a desire to strengthen the India-Japan-US trilateral grouping; and Japan’s endorsement of a greater role for India as a security provider in East Asia.
