This bulletin discusses the economic competition between India and China to get a foothold in Myanmar following the commencement of Naypyidaw’s “democratic transition” in 2012, which led to the lifting of international economic sanctions. The authors say that China will maintain a distinct advantage in this competition, but that India—and other countries such as the United States and Japan—offer Naypyidaw greater leverage against Beijing as it enables the country to show it has other options.
