This article discusses the underlying reasons for the violence inflicted by Burmese Buddhists on Muslims in Myanmar since 2012. The author sees religious interpretations of Buddhism’s historical decline and Islam’s subsequent dominance in parts of Asia as one of the main reasons for the religious violence in Myanmar. Having said this, he also believes other historical, political and social factors must be considered to better comprehend the motivations behind religious violence in the country.
