This paper draws on official Chinese documents, academic analyses, media coverage of Sino-Australian relations, and interviews to examine China's perceptions of Australia. In particular, it looks at 1) how the bilateral ties between the two nations have evolved since the 1970s, 2) how the evolution has affected the pursuit of both their interests, 3) how China perceives Australia’s 'middle-power diplomacy' in global and regional affairs, 4) where Beijing sees potential areas of tension and cooperation with its counterpart, and 5) what Canberra can do to manage its ties with Beijing more effectively.
