This brief reviews changes in Iran’s foreign relations under president Rouhani, and Iranian domestic reactions to these changes. The author says that Rouhani’s policy towards neighboring countries, his engagement with the Obama administration and the nuclear deal have generated debate and often contrasting reactions inside Iran. He concludes that, despite some internal criticism, Rouhani’s overall domestic support may allow him more leverage and suppleness in future domestic and foreign policy decisions.
