This paper looks at at the dispute over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands and why China has become more assertive in its claims over the islands since 2010. The author believes that while the conflict may appear to only involve Japan and China, Beijing's actions are motivated by a desire to form a new great power relationship with the United States.
