This commentary focuses on the political context in Afghanistan immediately prior to the 2014 presidential elections. It specifically traces 1) the development of electoral alliances beyond ethnicities, regions and political dogmas, 2) the growing levels of political awareness and participation by women and youth within the country, 3) the expectations Afghans have of their government's priorities, and 4) the widespread concerns of possible electoral violence and/or fraud.
