This commentary argues that using historical analogies, such drawing a parallel between the on-going Sino-Japanese tensions and the lead-up to World War I, is potentially problematic. The author believes that policymakers using historical analogies to make sense of ongoing issues ought to be aware of the inherent limitations of such an approach. He also contends that the public also ought to be conscious that such exercises are open to mischief and abuse.
