This essay analyzes the significance of Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) in India-China relations. The author 1) reviews the importance of SED; 2) looks at areas of convergence and divergence; and 3) argues that China’s current economic and financial pre-eminence means it is overlooking India’s bilateral concerns, creating unevenness in the SED. He contends that while the scope of the SED is relatively high now due to constant institutional engagement, it will remain limited unless fundamental bilateral economic issues are addressed.
