This paper argues that Russia's annexation of Crimea in early 2014 demonstrates that there is no general historical drive toward global peace, prosperity, and interconnectedness. Indeed, the author contends that Russia's action should remind us that the course of history is determined by men, that force must be met with force, and that wars are rarely local affairs.
